Everything Vegan at Zaxby’s (2023)

Zaxby’s is super common in the southern part of the USA, including where I live, but rather than being a sit-down restaurant like I thought they were it turns out they’re another fast-food “chicken” place.

I always thought they looked too fancy to be a fast-food place because of the outside of their buildings where I live, but it looks like I’ve been misled all these years.

Anyhow, Zaxby’s has a very few vegan options and nothing spectacular. Most “chicken” style fast-food joints have very little for us vegans, and they’re no exception. Arguably they have one of the least vegan-friendly menus out there — so avoid them if possible.

Every Zaxby’s Vegan Option:

  • Garden Salad (no cheese)
  • Crinkle Fries
  • Texas Toast (no butter)
  • BBQ sauce
  • Lite Vinaigrette salad dressing

I asked someone who I know who works there about how they prepare their stuff and if they use the same oil as I couldn’t find the information online, aaaand apparently they fry the Tater Chips in the same oil as Chicken, so if that bothers you don’t get them. The fries are generally fried separately though.

The Texas toast is prepared/warmed on the same flat top where they grill the bacon they also sell. It’s supposed to be on separate portions of the same grill though so cross-contact is unlikely, but it’s something to keep in mind.

You should also be allowed to order these sauces off-menu that they use on wings if you so happen to want them as dipping sauces:

  • Wimpy
  • Tongue Torch
  • Nuclear
  • Insane
  • Sweet & Spicy
  • Teriyaki
  • BBQ

So how does Zaxby’s look for a Vegan?

Not too great, even places like Church’s Chicken are a better option than Zaxby’s for a Vegan as at least they have corn. I’d say they’re one of the worst places, along with Wing Stop, for a Vegan to eat out at.

But I mean if you really like their Texas Toast or crinkle fries, they’re vegan.

But don’t expect to be able to make a meal out of a family gathering or a pit stop at Zaxby’s. At best you can come up with an OK snack.
